Surrounded by three rings of hills, this is the Park’s biggest geological feature, and is named the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex, and is the crater of an extinct volcano that last erupted more that 1,000 million years ago, and this is only one of three such sites in the world. One of the things you are likely to see visiting here are actual archeological sites, from both the stone and iron ages.

A large variety of different animals, birds, and plants can found in this park. The park itself is over 200 square miles, and can be traversed by well maintained dirt roads. Overnight camps and luxury safari lodges are available in the park, as well as many stops for cooling down

and buying gifts.

In the middle of Pilanesberg National Park is a manmade lake, Thabayadiotso, meaning, ‘the proud mountain.’ In Pilansberg you will find Africa’s big five: leopards, lions, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo. Cheetahs, sable antelopes, wild dogs ( also know as african hunting dogs) also call Pilansberg home.. This park is also host to over 350 different species of birds, some migratory, others permanent residents. There are many different walking tours and guided safaris to be had. At the Manyane Complex to the east, there is a walking area, self guided trail, and even an enclosed aviary, sporting more than 80 different indigenous bird species.
