Visiting Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is quite literally one of the most beautiful countries in the world. In the past, Zimbabwe was one of the most visited nations in all of Africa, but things have slowed down over the last two decades amid political turmoil and a struggling economy.

For those who are up for something off the beaten path, Zimbabwe has a lot to offer, and should not be shied away from if you’re looking for an unforgettable getaway in one of the most unique pieces of Africa.

Visitors to Zimbabwe will find a place of natural beauty, rich culture, friendly faces, and one of the most remarkable monuments to early civilization that can be found anywhere in the world.

Great Zimbabwe

Visitors to Zimbabwe should not miss the opportunity to visit one of the cradles of African Civilization.

Great Zimbabwe is a group of stone ruins set in the south eastern hills of the country. It was the capital of Zimbabwe during the Iron Age, and construction was started by the local Shona people early in the 11th century. In its prime, the city would have been home to 18,000 residents, including the Zimbabwean Monarch.

Great Zimbabwe is characterized by its stone walls and building remains, which were constructed without mortar. It is believed that the city was built over a period of 300 years, and ruins cover an area of over seven square kilometres.

Visitors can take a look in to the past through the ruins, and the experience could be likened to that of visiting Machu Picchu in South America.

The high stone walls, canonical stone towers, and the sculpture like granite boulders of the site are all highlights.

Climatic change, decline in natural gold reserves, and political turmoil were all factors in the decline of Great Zimbabwe, but visitors will still feel the majesty, and stand in Awe of this African monument today.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls are often thought of as the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, and are indeed one of southern Africa’s most visited attractions. Most visitors to the falls view them from the Zambian side of the border, but visitors to Zimbabwe can take what is arguably the best view.

The Zimbabwean side boasts such features as the “Devil’s Pool”, an area where brave visitors can swim at certain times of the year, separated from the thunder of the falls by only a few feet and a natural eddy formed by stone.

Because most visitors have chosen to visit the Zambian side of the falls since the early 2000s, intrepid travellers will find bargains in Zimbabwe with lower hotel rates, more developed infrastructure, and less tourist traffic, allowing them to enjoy the natural splendour in relative peace.

There are plenty of other things to do in Zimbabwe. Helicopter tourist rides, wildlife retreats, and even fishing on the spectacular Zambezi could all be options for visitors to the country.

Boasting one of the most comfortable climates in all of Africa, and being away from the relative hustle of other tourist destinations, Zimbabwe could be the diamond in the rough that you’re looking for on your next African adventure.

Entering ZimbabweHarare Zimbabwe

Many African passport holders can visit Zimbabwe on visa free permits, while the majority of nationals not included can enter on a visa issued at the border for less than $40 USD.

Zimbabwe uses US currency, and it’s advisable to carry cash for your trip as ATM access and acceptance of credit cards or travellers cheques can be limited.

Zimbabwe is a safe place for tourists, especially around popular areas where tourist police are always available. The people are friendly, and due to a struggling economy tourists are given welcoming hospitality, and are extremely well looked after. Visitors are advised to remain aware of their surroundings, and keep their valuables on their person, or secured at all times.
